Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths worldwide. Though it is less commonly seen in the United States, age-adjusted incidence rates have tripled here over the last three decades, and overall survival remains poor for those with advanced disease. Host factors, including viral hepatitis, metabolic syndrome, alcohol use, and genetic disorders, contribute to HCC pathogenesis, both singly and in combination.
