The age of 50 years was first imbued with false importance in breast cancer screening when, in a retrospective review of their data, the investigators of the first randomised trial of screening (the Health Insurance Plan of New York trial) decided to see whether menopause had an effect on their results, and used the age of 50 years as a surrogate for menopause.
