Palliative sedation: more data and fewer opinions

Menée au Japon auprès de 2 426 patients atteints d'un cancer de stade avancé et traités dans des unités de soins palliatifs, cette étude de cohorte prospective évalue les effets d'une sédation profonde et continue sur la survie

Palliative sedation, initially named terminal sedation, has become part of palliative care practice. The merit of the Article by Isseki Maeda and colleagues2 published in The Lancet Oncology is to increase the quality of the evidence available regarding the effect of continuous deep sedation on survival in order to support good clinical practice. Palliative sedation is defined in scientific documents and guidelines as the use of sedatives to reduce a patient's level of consciousness with the aim of relieving symptoms due to a terminal illness that cannot be controlled by any other means.
