Time for better presentation and analysis of adverse events
Most cancer treatments are associated with major toxicities. In this era of patient-centred research, patients need more information about how they should feel and function while undergoing cancer treatments. However, as Gita Thanarajasingam and colleagues point out in The Lancet Oncology, the convention of reporting the maximum grade of adverse event (defined by the US National Cancer Institute Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events [CTCAE]) that a treatment might cause is not informative enough to empower patients to make educated decisions about their health.
