Use of advanced imaging tests and the not-so-incidental harms of incidental findings
The medical community is increasingly aware that high imaging rates reflect overuse. The American Board of Internal Medicine Foundation’s Choosing Wisely Campaign, supported by over 500 medical specialty societies, aims to reduce overuse of imaging and other procedures by educating physicians and patients about potential harms. Computed tomography is the imaging modality that is most frequently identified as overused. An estimated 30% to 50% of the 80 million CT scans performed annually in the United States may be unnecessary.
