Unravelling the etiology of early-onset colorectal cancer

Colorectal cancer incidence and mortality rates are stabilizing or falling in many highincome countries primarily due to advances in screening, surveillance, and treatment. In the U.S., for example, from 1975 to 2015 the incidence of colorectal cancer declined by 37% while deaths from the disease fell by approximately 50%. In contrast, colorectal cancer incidence in younger adults(diagnosed prior to age 50 years) has risen. From 1988 to 2015 age-adjusted early-onset colorectal cancer incidence rates in the U.S rose from 7.9 to 12.9 cases per 100,000 people - corresponding to a 63% increase. This divergent pattern of incidence for overall and early-onset colorectal cancer incidence is mirrored in other highincome countries, including Australia, Canada, Germany, and Sweden.
