Focal Therapy for Prostate Cancer—Moving Beyond Technology Assessment
Conventional therapy for localized prostate cancer has targeted the whole prostate gland and results in bothersome urinary and sexual adverse effects. In efforts to reduce these adverse reactions, focal treatment for prostate cancer has garnered significant enthusiasm. Focal treatment involves a paradigm where only the cancerous portions of a prostate gland are treated and attempts are made to spare as much unaffected prostate tissue as possible. A number of technologies are known to be efficacious in histologically eradicating prostate cancer, including cryoablation and high-intensity focused ultrasonography.
