Laparoscopic Sentinel Node Navigation Surgery for Quality of Life Gains: When Is Less More?
Laparoscopic sentinel node navigation surgery (LSNNS) is a novel technique that maps the draining sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) in gastric cancer. The Sentinel Node Oriented Tailored Approach (SENORITA) trial evaluated whether stomach-preserving surgery is safe in early gastric cancer when combined with LSNSS and whether gastrectomy plus lymphadenectomy can be avoided if SLNs are negative.Eom et al are to be commended on evaluating the quality of life (QOL) data from the SENORITA trial to assess the nononcologic benefits of LSNNS. They compare the per-protocol group that received stomach-preserving surgery after LSNNS to those that received standard gastrectomy. The majority of patients in the former underwent wedge resections (85%), while most in the latter received distal gastrectomies (82%).
