Under Section 319 of the Public Health Service Act, the COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE) in the US expired on May 11, 2023. This milestone is an opportune moment to reflect on the long-term implications of the PHE for cancer morbidity and mortality. Cancer rates have decreased over several decades at approximately 2.3% per year, including at high-prevalence cancer sites such as breast, colon, and lung, and such reductions are attributable to sustained advances in prevention and treatment. The Biden administration has set a goal of decreasing cancer deaths by 50% over 25 years, which will necessitate acceleration of those reductions. To what extent has the PHE influenced that trajectory?
