Oophorectomy at the Time of Hysterectomy: The Debate Continues
Hysterectomy is a common surgical procedure in women. According to a 2018 National Health Interview Survey from the United States, 31.8% of women aged 50 years or older have had a hysterectomy (1). The question of removing ovaries at the time of benign hysterectomy to prevent ovarian cancer in low-risk women has been widely debated. Incidence rates of unilateral and bilateral oophorectomy have varied over time, partly because of this debate. In a longitudinal study (2), rates varied over a 69-year period and more recent trends were affected by evidence against the practice of oophorectomy starting in 2005 to 2006.
