Supporting Adolescents’ Desire to Quit E-Cigarettes

Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are the most widely used tobacco/nicotine product among US middle and high school adolescents. According to data from the 2023 National Youth Tobacco Survey, 2 million US middle and high school students (approximately 7%) reported using an e-cigarette in the past 30 days, including 10% of all US high school students (more than 1.5 million adolescents) and 4.6% of all US middle school students (550 000 adolescents).Adolescent e-cigarette use is concerning for several reasons. Research shows that e-cigarettes affect lung and cardiovascular health, among other health issues. Furthermore, longitudinal studies have shown that adolescents who initiate with e-cigarettes are more likely to go on to use conventional combustible cigarettes, putting them at risk for the many harms caused by cigarette use.
