The number of cancer survivors in the US and worldwide is increasing rapidly because of ongoing advances in early detection and treatment as well as aging of the population. In 2022, more than 18 million people in the US (5.4% of the population) were living with a history of cancer, of whom most were diagnosed within the past 10 years. This number is expected to increase by more than 40% to 26 million people by the year 2040. Cancer survivors are also living longer, with overall 5-year survival across all cancer sites now approaching 70%. Globally, 20 million new cases of cancer are diagnosed each year. Follow-up care for the growing population of cancer survivors will continue to be a major public health challenge.
