What to Expect…When You Are Having Surgery
There are many resources and lay literature that help expectant parents to prepare for having a child; however, there are quite limited resources for patients undergoing oncologic surgery. Patients want to know what to expect in symptoms and recovery as well as to have access to their clinical team during this time.Despite the importance of patient-centered outcomes such as symptoms and recovery, data of the patient experience in ambulatory oncologic surgery are sparse. Historically, perioperative outcomes and quality metrics focused primarily on the severity of complications and readmissions. This is a new era in medicine where comprehensive perioperative care can extend beyond the walls of the hospital. Available technology can allow for precise monitoring of patient-generated health data.
